Grow Up: From Carnal Christianity to Kingdom Maturity - I Corinthians 3
SECTION 1: Spiritual Immaturity Exposed (1 Corinthians 3:1-4)
Saved but still living flesh-driven
Infants in Christ vs spiritually mature
Milk vs solid food, capacity for growth
Immaturity revealed through:
Jealousy
Quarreling
Division
Acting like “mere humans” instead of Spirit-led people
Identity confusion produces division
Attaching identity to personalities instead of Christ
Steps / Application:
Identify areas of jealousy, comparison, offense
Evaluate spiritual growth, not just knowledge
Commit to spiritual disciplines that produce maturity
Detach identity from people and re-anchor in Christ
SECTION 2: Leaders Are Servants, Not Saviors (1 Corinthians 3:5-9)
Leaders are servants, not the source
“What is Paul? What is Apollos?”
Different roles, same mission
Planting and watering vs God producing growth
God alone gives increase
Faithfulness over recognition
Co-workers, not competitors
The Church belongs to God, not man
Steps / Application:
Identify misplaced loyalty to personalities
Remove people from pedestals
Refocus dependence on God as the source
Embrace your role without comparison
Serve faithfully without needing recognition
SECTION 3: Build Carefully on the Right Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:10-15)
Build with intentionality and care
Foundation is Jesus Christ alone
Responsibility for what you build on that foundation
Two types of materials:
Gold, silver, costly stones (eternal)
Wood, hay, straw (temporary)
Fire will test the quality of the work
Possible to be saved but lose reward
God values quality over visibility
Steps / Application:
Evaluate what your life is built with
Choose obedience over convenience
Prioritize eternal impact over temporary success
Embrace refinement instead of rushing growth
Make decisions that will withstand testing
SECTION 4: You Are God’s Temple (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
The Church is God’s dwelling place
“You” is plural, the body of believers
God’s Spirit dwells among His people
The temple is sacred
Damaging the body is serious
Division, gossip, and strife corrupt the temple
Believers carry the presence of God
Steps / Application:
Evaluate how your words and actions affect others
Eliminate gossip, division, and offense
Contribute to unity and edification
Treat the body as sacred
Live aware of the presence you carry
SECTION 5: Stop Boasting in Men, Identity in Christ (1 Corinthians 3:18-23)
Warning against self-deception
Worldly wisdom vs godly wisdom
True wisdom requires humility
God exposes human pride and cleverness
Stop boasting in human leaders
All things belong to those in Christ
Identity is rooted in belonging to Christ
Steps / Application:
Identify where you are trying to prove yourself
Reject comparison and competition
Let go of dependence on human validation
Embrace humility over self-promotion
Rest in your identity in Christ
Live from fullness, not for approval
CLOSING FLOW
Move from immaturity to maturity
Shift from personality-driven faith to Christ-centered identity
Build with eternal materials
Honor and protect the body of Christ
Live from identity, not striving
Final Charge:
Stop living like an infant
Start building something eternal
Walk in maturity, unity, and identity in Christ
