Honor, Order, and the Table - I Corinthians 11
OPENING: CONTEXT + THESIS
- Corinth culture:
- Chaotic, sensual, status-driven
- Culture shaping the church instead of church transforming culture
- Core problem:
- External activity without internal alignment
- Key tension:
- You can gather in Jesus’ name and still miss His heart
- Thesis questions:
- Who are you representing?
- Do you understand what you are participating in?
- Big idea:
- Alignment with God’s design affects both your life and your worship
SECTION 1: HEADSHIP AND ORDER (11:1–6)
- v.1: Imitation is the standard
- Christianity is modeled, not just believed
- v.2–3: God’s order of authority
- Christ -> man -> woman -> God over Christ
- Order, not inequality
- Alignment, not oppression
- Key principle:
- Everyone lives under some authority
- External expression reveals internal alignment
- Honor vs. dishonor in representation
Application:
- Who are you imitating?
- Who or what is leading your life?
- Where are you resisting God’s authority?
- Does your life reflect Christ or culture?
SECTION 2: HONOR, IDENTITY, AND DISTINCTION (11:7–16)
- v.7: Reflection of glory
- Man reflects God
- Woman reflects man (design, not value hierarchy)
- v.8–9: Order of creation
- Design reveals purpose
- Cultural tension:
- Rejecting design vs. embracing identity
- v.11–12: Interdependence
- Mutual need, not independence or dominance
- v.13–15: Visible distinction matters
- God-designed differences are intentional
Key principle:
- Distinction is part of God’s design, not a flaw
Application:
- Are you embracing or resisting your God-given identity?
- Where have you confused equality with sameness?
- Are you honoring God in how you represent Him daily?
- Are you reflecting clarity or confusion?
SECTION 3: WORSHIP GONE WRONG (11:17–22)
- v.17: Gatherings doing harm instead of good
- v.18–19: Division and factions
- Division reveals authenticity
- v.20–21: Self-centered gatherings
- Wealthy indulging, poor neglected
- Sacred turned selfish
- v.22: Despising the church, humiliating others
Key principle:
- You can gather in Jesus’ name and still dishonor Him
Modern parallels:
- Consumer mindset in church
- Preference over unity
- Image over humility
Application:
- Do you come to give or to get?
- Are you aware of others or focused on yourself?
- Where is there division, comparison, or pride?
- Are you honoring people as part of Christ’s body?
SECTION 4: THE LORD’S SUPPER (11:23–26)
- v.23: Received from the Lord
- Divine authority, not tradition
- "Night He was betrayed"
- Context of sacrifice and intentionality
- v.24–25:
- Body broken
- Blood establishes new covenant
- v.26: Proclamation
- Past: His death
- Present: Your alignment
- Future: His return
Key principle:
- Communion is proclamation, not routine
Three directions:
- Look back (cross)
- Look inward (heart)
- Look forward (return)
Application:
- Has the cross become familiar or still weighty?
- Are you remembering or just repeating?
- Does your life reflect the covenant you claim?
- Are you proclaiming truth while living in contradiction?
SECTION 5: EXAMINE YOURSELF (11:27–34)
- v.27: Unworthy manner vs. unworthy person
- Issue is posture, not perfection
- v.28: Self-examination
- Personal responsibility
- v.29: Discerning the body
- Recognizing Christ and His people
- v.30: Real consequences
- Weakness, illness, death (discipline, not rejection)
- v.31–32: Self-judgment vs. God’s discipline
- Correction as mercy
- v.33–34: Unity and consideration
Key principle:
- God disciplines what He loves to protect what is holy
Application:
- Is there unrepentant sin?
- Is there bitterness or division?
- Are you treating Jesus casually?
- Are you honoring the body, both Christ and others?
