Run the Race, Receive the Kingdom - Hebrews 12

1. Context Setup (Hebrews 1-11)

  • Jesus is superior to angels, Moses, and the priesthood

  • Christ is the mediator of a better covenant

  • Hebrews 11 shows the heroes of faith

  • Hebrews 12 answers the question: How do we live by faith now?


SECTION 1: Run the Race of Faith

Hebrews 12:1-3

  • Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses

  • Their lives testify that faith in God is worth it

  • Lay aside every weight

  • Lay aside the sin that entangles

  • Run the race with endurance

  • The race is long, not a sprint

  • Each believer has a race set before them

  • Fix your eyes on Jesus

  • Jesus is the author and finisher of faith

  • Christ endured the cross for the joy set before Him

  • Consider Christ so you do not grow weary

Application Steps

  • Identify spiritual weights

  • Confess and remove sin

  • Refocus attention on Christ

  • Commit to endurance


SECTION 2: The Discipline of the Father

Hebrews 12:4-11

  • The Christian life includes struggle against sin

  • Jesus shed His blood, believers have not yet

  • Do not despise the discipline of the Lord

  • God disciplines those He loves

  • Discipline proves sonship

  • Earthly fathers discipline imperfectly

  • God disciplines perfectly

  • The goal of discipline is holiness

  • Discipline is painful in the moment

  • Later it produces the fruit of righteousness

Application Steps

  • Reframe hardship as training

  • Submit to God's shaping work

  • Avoid bitterness toward discipline

  • Trust God's purpose in suffering


SECTION 3: Strengthen the Weak

Hebrews 12:12-17

  • Lift drooping hands

  • Strengthen weak knees

  • Encourage one another in the race

  • Make straight paths for your feet

  • Your life influences others

  • Pursue peace with everyone

  • Pursue holiness

  • Without holiness no one will see the Lord

  • Guard against bitterness

  • Bitterness spreads like a root

  • Warning from Esau

  • Do not trade eternal inheritance for temporary satisfaction

Application Steps

  • Strengthen weary believers

  • Walk with integrity

  • Remove bitterness from the heart

  • Choose eternal priorities over temporary pleasure


SECTION 4: Two Mountains

Hebrews 12:18-24

Mount Sinai

  • Fire

  • Darkness

  • Storm

  • Fear

  • The voice of God terrified the people

  • The law revealed guilt and separation

Mount Zion

  • The heavenly Jerusalem

  • Innumerable angels in celebration

  • The assembly of the redeemed

  • God the judge

  • Spirits of the righteous made perfect

  • Jesus the mediator of the new covenant

  • The blood of Jesus speaks a better word than Abel

Application Steps

  • Understand the contrast between law and grace

  • Approach God through Christ

  • Rest in the finished work of Jesus


SECTION 5: The Unshakable Kingdom

Hebrews 12:25-29

  • Do not refuse the voice of God

  • Greater accountability under Christ

  • God will shake heaven and earth

  • Temporary things will be removed

  • Eternal things will remain

  • Believers receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken

  • Respond with gratitude and worship

  • Worship with reverence and awe

  • God is a consuming fire

Application Steps

  • Listen carefully to God's voice

  • Anchor life in eternal things

  • Live in reverence before God

  • Build life on the unshakable kingdom


Final Call

  • Lay aside the weight

  • Run with endurance

  • Receive the Father's discipline

  • Pursue holiness

  • Fix your eyes on Jesus

  • Stand firm in the unshakable kingdom
