The Weight of Authority: Who’s Really in Charge? - Ephesians 6:1-9

Segment 1

Foundations: Authority and Obedience in the Lord

  • Authority is established by God, not created by people
  • Obedience is rooted in relationship, not perfection
  • “In the Lord” frames every command (Ephesians 6:1)
  • Obedience trains the heart before it shows up in adulthood
  • Honor is a lifelong posture, obedience is season specific
  • The fifth commandment includes a promise (Ephesians 6:2-3)
  • Authority exists to form, not dominate
  • Fathers are warned against provoking anger (Ephesians 6:4)
  • Discipline and instruction require presence and patience
  • God cares how authority is exercised, not just that it exists

Segment 2

Authority Is a Stewardship, Not a Throne

  • Authority is an assignment, not ownership
  • Stewardship requires accountability to God
  • Misused authority produces resentment and rebellion
  • Fathers and masters are given limits (Ephesians 6:4, 6:9)
  • Authority without accountability becomes destructive
  • Jesus redefines greatness through service (Mark 10:42-45)
  • Provocation flows from insecure leadership
  • Discipline shapes hearts, not just behavior
  • Threat based leadership reveals fear, not strength
  • Every leader answers to the same Master in heaven

Segment 3

Obedience When No One Is Watching

  • Obedience reveals allegiance, not convenience
  • Eye service is obedience driven by surveillance (Ephesians 6:6)
  • Sincere obedience flows from the heart (Ephesians 6:5)
  • Christ is the true audience of our obedience
  • Wholehearted service integrates faith into daily life (Ephesians 6:7)
  • Integrity is formed in unseen places
  • God sees and rewards faithfulness (Ephesians 6:8)
  • Obedience is strength under control
  • Faithfulness matters more than visibility
  • Obedience becomes worship when Christ is Lord

Segment 4

Living Under the Same Lord

  • Earthly roles are temporary, Christ is eternal
  • Leaders and followers share the same Master (Ephesians 6:9)
  • No favoritism with God removes pride and fear
  • Authority increases responsibility, not privilege
  • Equality before God intensifies accountability
  • Remembering our Master reshapes behavior
  • Leadership mirrors obedience when Christ is central
  • Humility flows from eternal perspective
  • The gospel purifies structure, it does not erase it
  • Faithful living makes the Kingdom visible

Practical Steps
