Untouchable No More - Mark 1:40-25
Opening Hook
- You are not stuck because God is unwilling, you are stuck because you are distant
- Biggest lie: God can, but not for me
- Many live spiritually isolated while appearing fine
- Desperation breaks barriers dignity protects
- Central question: Is God willing for me?
Segment 1: The Desperation of the Leper (Mark 1:40)
- Leprosy = total isolation (social, physical, spiritual)
- Identity replaced by condition ("unclean")
- Shame creates distance and self-rejection
- The man comes to Jesus anyway (breaks rules, risks everything)
- Faith statement: "You can"... but question: "Will You?"
Key Truths:
- Desperation drives real faith
- Many believe in God’s ability but doubt His willingness
Application:
- Where am I keeping distance from Jesus?
- What shame or fear is holding me back?
- Am I protecting image instead of pursuing healing?
Segment 2: The Compassion of Christ (Mark 1:41)
- Jesus is moved with compassion (deep emotional response)
- He touches before He heals
- Cultural shock: touching the unclean
- Jesus reverses impurity, He does not absorb it
Key Truths:
- Jesus moves toward brokenness, not away from it
- You are not untouchable to Him
- God is not distant, He is emotionally engaged
Application:
- What do I think is "too much" for Jesus to touch?
- Do I see Him as compassionate or distant?
- Who am I avoiding that Jesus would move toward?
Segment 3: The Command and the Cleansing (Mark 1:41-44)
- Immediate healing, complete restoration
- Jesus gives a stern command
- Instructions:
- Say nothing publicly
- Go to the priest (Leviticus 14)
- Follow the process of restoration
Key Truths:
- Miracle does not remove responsibility
- Obedience must follow breakthrough
- Jesus is not just Savior, He is Lord
Application:
- What has God already told me to do?
- Am I delaying obedience?
- Do I want freedom without structure or accountability?
Segment 4: The Disobedience and the Consequence (Mark 1:45)
- The man immediately disobeys
- Motivated by excitement, not rebellion
- Good intentions still lead to disobedience
Consequences:
- Jesus can no longer enter towns openly
- Ministry becomes more difficult
- Roles reverse: man gains access, Jesus takes limitation
Key Truths:
- Good intentions do not justify disobedience
- Actions have ripple effects beyond you
- Disobedience complicates what God is doing
Application:
- Where am I doing what feels right instead of what God said?
- Have I replaced obedience with enthusiasm?
- Is my life helping or hindering God’s work?
Core Themes to Reinforce
- Brokenness moves toward Jesus
- Jesus moves toward brokenness
- Healing comes with instruction
- Disobedience carries consequence
Closing Challenge
- Two groups:
- Those who need to come to Jesus
- Those who need to obey Jesus
Final Questions:
- Will I come close or keep my distance?
- Will I obey or keep drifting?
