Why Jesus Is Better Than the Old System - Hebrews 7

I. A Greater Priest Revealed, Hebrews 7:1 to 10

  • Melchizedek appears before the law, Genesis 14

  • King of righteousness, then king of peace, Hebrews 7:2

  • Priest and king united in one person

  • No recorded genealogy, Hebrews 7:3

  • Authority not rooted in lineage but divine appointment

  • Abraham tithes to Melchizedek, Hebrews 7:4

  • The lesser is blessed by the greater, Hebrews 7:7

  • Levi, in Abraham, symbolically submits, Hebrews 7:9 to 10

  • Conclusion: The Melchizedek priesthood is greater than the Levitical system

II. A Broken System Exposed, Hebrews 7:11 to 19

  • If perfection came through Levi, why promise another priest? Hebrews 7:11

  • Perfection means completion, full access to God

  • Change in priesthood requires change in law, Hebrews 7:12

  • Jesus from Judah, not Levi, Hebrews 7:13 to 14

  • Priesthood based on indestructible life, not ancestry, Hebrews 7:16

  • Psalm 110:4 promised a forever priest

  • Former command set aside due to weakness, Hebrews 7:18

  • The law made nothing perfect, Hebrews 7:19

  • A better hope is introduced

  • Through this hope we draw near to God

III. A Better Covenant Secured, Hebrews 7:20 to 25

  • Jesus installed as priest with a divine oath, Hebrews 7:20 to 21

  • God swore and will not change His mind

  • Jesus is guarantor of a better covenant, Hebrews 7:22

  • Many priests before because they died, Hebrews 7:23

  • Christ holds priesthood permanently, Hebrews 7:24

  • He always lives

  • He saves to the uttermost, Hebrews 7:25

  • Ongoing intercession secures ongoing salvation

  • Salvation anchored in a living High Priest

IV. A Perfect High Priest Exalted, Hebrews 7:26 to 28

  • Fitting that we have such a High Priest, Hebrews 7:26

  • Holy

  • Innocent

  • Unstained

  • Separated from sinners

  • Exalted above the heavens

  • No need to offer sacrifice for Himself, Hebrews 7:27

  • Offered Himself once for all

  • Law appoints weak men, Hebrews 7:28

  • Oath appoints a Son made perfect forever

  • Final, sufficient, eternal priesthood

V. Big Picture Synthesis and Application

  • God always intended a greater priesthood

  • The old system was temporary and preparatory

  • The law exposes but cannot perfect

  • Jesus fulfills Psalm 110 and Genesis 14

  • His life is indestructible

  • His priesthood is permanent

  • His sacrifice is once for all

  • His intercession is ongoing

  • His salvation is complete

Application Steps

  • Define where you are placing your confidence

  • Stop trusting religious performance for perfection

  • Embrace the better hope introduced in Christ

  • Draw near to God through Him, Hebrews 7:25

  • Rest in a High Priest who always lives

  • Live in assurance grounded in His finished work

  • Worship the Son who reigns forever
