You Think You’re Good…And That’s the Problem - I Corinthians 10
Opening Context
- Audience: church people, not outsiders
- Israel had:
- Miracles
- Provision
- Guidance
- Presence
- Key tension: “Nevertheless… God was not pleased” (v. 5)
- Warning: exposure ≠ transformation
- Theme: drift, not rebellion
- Anchor: this is written for us
- Set question: Where could this happen in me?
Section 1: Privilege Without Obedience (vv. 1–5)
- “All” experienced God:
- Cloud (guidance)
- Sea (deliverance)
- Baptism into Moses (identity)
- Spiritual food/drink (provision)
- Christ present (v. 4)
- “Nevertheless” (v. 5):
- Most fell
- Key truth:
- Exposure to God ≠ surrender to God
- Warning:
- Spiritual activity ≠ spiritual health
- Anchor question:
- Is God pleased, not just present?
Application
- Where am I relying on past experiences?
- Where has exposure replaced obedience?
- What is my current condition, not my past moments?
Section 2: Patterns of Destruction (vv. 6–13)
- Root issue: desire (v. 6)
- Progression:
- Craving evil things
- Idolatry (v. 7)
- Sexual immorality (v. 8)
- Testing Christ (v. 9)
- Grumbling (v. 10)
- Pattern:
- Desire → distortion → disobedience → destruction
- Warning (v. 12):
- Confidence in self leads to fall
- Promise + accountability (v. 13):
- Temptation is common
- God provides a way out
- You must take it
Application
- What desires am I feeding?
- Where am I testing boundaries?
- Where is God providing an exit I’m ignoring?
- Where has complaining replaced trust?
Section 3: Idolatry and Allegiance (vv. 14–22)
- Command: “Flee from idolatry” (v. 14)
- Participation principle:
- Communion = sharing in Christ (vv. 16–17)
- Sacrifices = sharing in altar (v. 18)
- Spiritual reality:
- Idolatry = alignment with demons (v. 20)
- Absolute statement (v. 21):
- Cannot drink both cups
- Cannot sit at both tables
- God’s jealousy (v. 22):
- Covenant loyalty demanded
Key truth
- What you participate in shapes you
- Divided loyalty will not hold
Application
- What am I consistently participating in?
- Where am I living divided?
- What competes with Christ in my life?
- What table am I actually sitting at?
Section 4: Freedom and Responsibility (vv. 23–30)
- Reframe freedom (v. 23):
- Not “Is it lawful?”
- But “Is it helpful? Does it build up?”
- Command (v. 24):
- Seek others’ good
- Balanced freedom:
- Don’t overanalyze everything (vv. 25–27)
- But limit freedom when others are affected (v. 28)
- Clarification:
- Not your conscience, theirs (v. 29)
- Kingdom principle:
- Love > liberty
Key truth
- Freedom is for building others, not indulging self
Application
- Where am I asking “Can I?” instead of “Should I?”
- What is not helping me spiritually?
- Who is affected by my choices?
- Where am I unwilling to limit my freedom?
Section 5: Living for God’s Glory (vv. 31–33)
- Anchor verse (v. 31):
- “Whatever you do… do all to the glory of God”
- No compartments:
- Everything is spiritual
- Aim (v. 32):
- Avoid unnecessary offense
- Mission (v. 33):
- Seek others’ salvation, not self-advantage
Key truth
- Life is a display of God’s glory
Application
- Does my life point to God?
- What areas are not submitted to Him?
- Do my actions draw people toward or away from Christ?
- Whose advantage am I living for?
Closing Charge (3–5 min)
- Recap pattern:
- Privilege → drift → destruction
- Warning (v. 12):
- Take heed if you think you stand
- Hope (v. 13):
- God is faithful
- There is always a way out
- Call to action:
- Flee, don’t manage
- Choose your table
- Live undivided
Final challenges
- Where do I need to flee now?
- What do I need to cut off or surrender?
- Where am I drifting?
- Am I building my life on Christ or confidence in myself?
Modern Context Bridge (Use anywhere)
- Idols today:
- Money / success
- Sex / pleasure
- Approval / image
- Self / autonomy
- Key line:
- You bow to what you can’t say no to
- Core truth:
- Idolatry = misplaced worship
One-Line Summary
- You don’t drift into holiness… you drift into compromise.
