You’re Right... But You’re Wrecking People - I Corinthians 8
Opening Hook and Context
- Being right does not equal being righteous in how you carry it
- You can win arguments and lose people
- Corinth context: meat sacrificed to idols, divided believers
- Issue is not food, it is maturity
- Tension: freedom vs responsibility, knowledge vs love
- Not everyone is at the same place spiritually
Section 1: Knowledge vs Love (v.1-3)
- v.1 Knowledge puffs up, love builds up
- Knowledge alone leads to pride
- Love strengthens others
- v.2 Thinking you have arrived reveals immaturity
- True knowledge produces humility
- v.3 Loving God is the evidence of being known by Him
Application
- Am I using truth to build or to win?
- Does my knowledge produce humility or arrogance?
- Do people leave interactions with me strengthened or diminished?
Section 2: Truth That Is Actually True (v.4-6)
- v.4 Idols are nothing, there is one God
- Truth is affirmed, not compromised
- v.5 Many false gods exist in culture
- v.6 One God (source), one Lord Jesus (means), all things for Him
- Life is from Him and for Him
- Freedom must be filtered through God’s purpose
Application
- Do I stop at “Is it allowed?” or ask “Does it reflect God?”
- Am I defending freedom more than reflecting Christ?
- Do I live like my life belongs to Him or to me?
Section 3: The Problem of Conscience (v.7-9)
- v.7 Not all believers have the same understanding
- Background and past shape conscience
- Weak conscience is still real and sensitive
- Acting against conscience defiles a person
- v.8 This issue does not earn standing with God
- v.9 Your rights can become a stumbling block
Application
- Am I aware of where others are spiritually?
- Do I dismiss others as weak instead of caring for them?
- Where might my freedom be harming someone?
Section 4: When Freedom Destroys Someone (v.10-12)
- v.10 People follow what they see in you
- Influence can override someone’s conscience
- v.11 Your actions can contribute to someone’s destruction
- That person is someone Christ died for
- v.12 Wounding others is sin against Christ
- Influence carries responsibility
Application
- Who is watching and learning from my life?
- Where might my example confuse or mislead someone?
- Do I take responsibility for my influence?
Section 5: The Radical Conclusion (v.13)
- v.13 Willingness to completely give up a right
- Love limits freedom voluntarily
- Maturity chooses sacrifice over entitlement
- Not legalism, but love-driven surrender
- Strongest believer is most willing to lay things down
Application
- What freedoms am I unwilling to give up?
- Where is God calling me to limit myself?
- Do I love others enough to inconvenience myself?
Closing Summary
- This chapter is about love, not food
- You can be right and still be wrong
- Freedom without love is dangerous
- Maturity is measured by what you surrender
- The question is not “Is it allowed?” but “Does it build others?”
- Christ is the model, laying down rights for others
Final Challenge
- Identify where you are right but not loving
- Consider who is affected by your life
- Choose love over personal freedom
- Surrender anything that hinders others from growing in Christ
