Romans 10:5-21 Teaching Outline

"Congratulations, You've Tried Everything Except Jesus"

  • 1. The Problem With Performance - Romans 10:5
    • Righteousness based on the law requires obedience.
    • God's standard is perfection, not comparison.
    • The law reveals the problem but cannot cure it.
    • The law is the mirror, not the soap.
    • Stop grading righteousness on a curve.
  • 2. Stop Trying to Climb Your Way to God - Romans 10:6-7
    • You do not have to ascend to heaven to find Christ.
    • You do not have to descend into the abyss to retrieve Him.
    • Christ has already come down.
    • Christ has already risen.
    • Christianity begins with what Christ accomplished, not what we accomplish.
  • 3. The Gospel Has Come Near - Romans 10:8

    • God has made the gospel accessible.
    • Grace comes looking for us.
  • 4. Jesus Is Lord - Romans 10:9-10
    • Believe that God raised Jesus from the dead.
    • Confess that Jesus is Lord.
    • Confession is more than repeating religious words.
    • "Jesus is Lord" is a declaration of allegiance.
    • Heart belief produces outward confession.
    • Christianity is not merely private spirituality, it is allegiance to a risen King.
  • 5. Everyone Means Everyone - Romans 10:11-13
    • Everyone who believes will not be put to shame.
    • There is no distinction between Jew and Greek regarding access to salvation in Christ.
    • Religious pedigree cannot save.
    • Heritage cannot save.
    • Morality cannot save.
    • Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
    • Your past explains your need for a Savior, it does not place you beyond the Savior.
  • 6. How Will They Hear? - Romans 10:14-15
    • Calling requires believing.
    • Believing requires hearing.
    • Hearing requires proclamation.
    • Proclamation requires people willing to go.
    • "Beautiful feet" are feet that carry good news.
    • The gospel was never intended to stop with us.
    • Ask: "Who knows more about Jesus because I know Jesus?"
    • Ask: "Does the chain stop with me?"
  • 7. Hearing Does Not Guarantee Believing - Romans 10:16
    • Not everyone who hears the gospel receives it.
    • The gospel calls for a response.
    • Faith is more than intellectual agreement.
    • We are responsible for faithful proclamation.
    • We cannot regenerate another person's heart.
  • 8. Faith Comes by Hearing - Romans 10:17
    • Faith comes through hearing the word of Christ.
    • Biblical faith has an object: Jesus Christ.
    • The power is not in the intensity of our faith.
    • The power is in the One in whom we place our faith.
    • A trembling hand can receive a strong Savior.
  • 9. Israel Heard the Message - Romans 10:18-19

    • God had spoken.
    • God had revealed.
    • God had warned.
    • Moses anticipated God's work among the nations.
    • Gentile inclusion demonstrates the widening reach of God's redemptive purpose.

    • God describes Himself holding out His hands.
    • Israel's unbelief occurs despite God's repeated calling.
    • God's holiness does not eliminate His patience.
    • God's judgment does not negate His invitation.
    • The picture is of a God reaching toward a disobedient and contrary people.
  • 12. Probing Application
    • What are you still trying to earn that Christ offers by grace?
    • Are you trusting Christ or your religious performance?
    • Does "Jesus is Lord" describe the actual direction of your life?
    • Has Christianity become something you consume rather than proclaim?
    • Who needs to hear the gospel from you?
    • Are you resisting God's outstretched hands?
  • 13. Final Gospel Movement
    • You do not have to climb into heaven, Christ came down.
    • You do not have to conquer death, Christ rose from the grave.
    • You do not manufacture righteousness, Christ provides righteousness.
    • Believe Him.
    • Confess Him.
    • Call upon Him.
    • Follow Him.
    • Tell somebody.
    • Final question: "How will they hear if nobody tells them?"
