Segment One: Get Back on the Altar

Romans 12:1-2, Surrender and Transformation

• 1. Start with "Therefore" - Romans 12:1
  • Romans 12 flows out of Romans 1-11.
  • Theology must become biography.
  • What God has done leads to how we now live.
  • Romans 11:33-36 ends in worship, Romans 12:1 turns worship into action.
• 2. Remember the foundation: "By the mercies of God"
  • Mercy comes before obedience.
  • Grace comes before surrender.
  • Romans 5:8, Christ died for us while we were sinners.
  • Romans 8:1, no condemnation for those in Christ.
  • We do not obey to earn acceptance.
  • We obey because we have been accepted.
• 3. "Present your bodies" - Romans 12:1
  • God wants more than intellectual agreement.
  • Christianity is not merely believing in Jesus, it is belonging to Jesus.
  • Romans 6:13, present yourself to God as one brought from death to life.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "You are not your own."
  • Our bodies become instruments of righteousness.
  • Eyes, mouth, hands, sexuality, appetites, money, time, relationships, ambitions.
• 4. Become a "living sacrifice"
  • Old covenant sacrifice imagery.
  • The sacrifice belonged completely to God.
  • Jesus calls us to daily surrender, Luke 9:23.
  • A living sacrifice can crawl off the altar.
  • Surrender is not a single emotional experience.
  • Surrender is the daily acknowledgment that Jesus is Lord.
• 5. Probing application: What keeps crawling off your altar?
  • Control?
  • Money?
  • Sexuality?
  • Ambition?
  • Reputation?
  • Relationships?
  • Bitterness?
  • Future plans?
  • Need for approval?
  • Need to be right?
  • We can surrender something verbally while retaining it functionally.
• 6. Redefine worship
  • "Which is your spiritual worship" - Romans 12:1.
  • Worship is bigger than music.
  • Worship is surrender.
  • The primary image here is not a stage, but an altar.
  • Worship asks: What actually belongs to God?
• 7. Conformation vs. transformation - Romans 12:2
  • "Do not be conformed to this world."
  • The present age constantly attempts to shape us.
  • Every culture disciples.
  • Culture defines success, identity, sexuality, happiness, freedom, fear, and desire.
  • Repetition can make something feel normal without making it true.
• 8. Ask: Who is discipling your mind?
  • Scripture or social media?
  • Christ or culture?
  • Truth or appetite?
  • The Holy Spirit through the Word or the algorithm?
  • Something is always forming us.
• 9. "Be transformed by the renewal of your mind" - Romans 12:2
  • Metamorphoo, genuine transformation.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17, new creation.
  • Christianity is not behavior modification.
  • The gospel is death, resurrection, and transformation.
  • God changes us from the inside out.
• 10. Recognize the lie underneath the sin
  • Genesis 3:1-6, temptation begins by questioning God's truth and goodness.
  • Greed: "God will not provide."
  • Lust: "My desires determine what is right."
  • Pride: "I am the source of my success."
  • Envy: "God gave the wrong person the blessing."
  • Bitterness: "I deserve God's judgment seat."
  • People pleasing: "Their approval determines my worth."
  • Transformation requires replacing lies with truth.
• 11. Renew the mind with truth
  • John 17:17, "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth."
  • Scripture recalibrates our understanding of reality.
  • God's Word tells us who God is, who we are, and what ultimately matters.
  • Feelings are real but not infallible.
  • Desires are powerful but not sovereign.
  • The world is loud, but it is not Lord.
• 12. Renewed minds develop discernment - Romans 12:2
  • "That by testing you may discern what is the will of God."
  • Hebrews 5:14, mature believers develop trained discernment.
  • God's will is more than discovering the next decision.
  • Maturity increasingly recognizes what pleases God.
  • Ask:
    • Does this honor Christ?
    • Does this reflect God's holiness?
    • Does this serve my neighbor?
    • Does this enslave me?
    • Does this feed the flesh or cultivate the Spirit?
    • Is this forming me into Christlikeness?
• 13. Follow Paul's progression
  • Mercy
  • Surrender
  • Renewal
  • Transformation
  • Discernment
• 14. Closing challenge
  • We want purpose, God begins with surrender.
  • We want calling, God begins with consecration.
  • We want direction, God begins with transformation.
  • Before asking, "What does God want me to do?"
  • Ask, "Who is God making me?"
  • Then ask, "Does God actually have all of me?"

Segment Two: Your Ego Is Not a Spiritual Gift

Romans 12:3-8, Humility, the Body, and Spiritual Gifts

• 1. A renewed mind produces a renewed view of yourself - Romans 12:3
  • Verse 2: renew your mind.
  • Verse 3: change how you think about yourself.
  • Transformation immediately confronts pride.
  • "Do not think of himself more highly than he ought to think."
• 2. Practice sober judgment
  • Biblical humility is not self-hatred.
  • Humility is accurate self-assessment before God.
  • Pride exaggerates.
  • Insecurity distorts.
  • Humility tells the truth.
  • "I have value, but I am not God."
  • "I have gifts, but I received them."
  • "I have a role, but I am not the whole Body."
• 3. Everything is grace
  • Romans 12:3, "By the grace given to me."
  • 1 Corinthians 4:7, "What do you have that you did not receive?"
  • Intelligence, ability, opportunity, influence, resources, and gifts are received.
  • Giftedness is never grounds for superiority.
  • We are stewards, not sources.
• 4. Understand the Body - Romans 12:4-5
  • One body, many members.
  • Different members have different functions.
  • Diversity is intentional.
  • Christianity is personal, but never intended to be isolated.
  • "Individually members one of another."
• 5. Destroy pride and envy
  • Pride: "My gift makes me more important."
  • Envy: "Their gift makes me less important."
  • 1 Corinthians 12, the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you."
  • Difference does not determine value.
  • Function does not determine worth.
  • Visibility does not equal importance.
• 6. Stop comparing callings
  • Comparison produces arrogance or insecurity.
  • Stop trying to become somebody else's part of the Body.
  • The question is not, "Why didn't God give me their gift?"
  • The question is, "Am I faithful with what God gave me?"
• 7. "Having gifts that differ" - Romans 12:6
  • Gifts are intentionally different.
  • Charismata, gifts, flows from charis, grace.
  • Spiritual gifts are grace-gifts.
  • Your gift is not a trophy.
  • Your gift is a stewardship.
• 8. Use the gift - Romans 12:6-8
  • Prophecy: exercise it faithfully.
  • Service: serve.
  • Teaching: teach.
  • Exhortation: encourage and challenge.
  • Giving: give generously.
  • Leadership: lead diligently.
  • Mercy: show it cheerfully.
  • Stop merely admiring your gift and start exercising it.
• 9. Gifts exist for other people
  • 1 Peter 4:10, use your gift to serve one another.
  • We are "stewards of God's varied grace."
  • God gives grace to you that He intends to deliver through you.
  • Spiritual gifts are not primarily about discovering what makes you special.
  • They are about discovering how God intends you to serve.
• 10. Connect the two segments
  • Romans 12:1, present your body.
  • Romans 12:5, become useful within the Body.
  • First surrender.
  • Then service.
  • First altar.
  • Then assignment.
  • First consecration.
  • Then contribution.
• 11. Final progression of Romans 12:1-8
  • Receive mercy.
  • Present yourself.
  • Renew your mind.
  • Reject conformity.
  • Experience transformation.
  • Develop discernment.
  • Think humbly.
  • Embrace the Body.
  • Recognize your gift.
  • Use your gift.
  • Serve others.
• Closing truth
  • God does not give you a gift merely to prove that you are important.
  • He gives you a gift because somebody else needs the grace He intends to deliver through you.
