Segment One: Their Stumble Wasn't the End

Romans 11:11-16

• 1. A stumble is not necessarily the end, Romans 11:11
  • Israel stumbled through unbelief.
  • Stumbling is not the same as final rejection.
  • Something can be real without being final.
  • Do not put a period where God may have put a comma.
• 2. God works redemptively through human failure, Romans 11:11
  • Israel's trespass became the occasion for the gospel spreading to the Gentiles.
  • God does not call evil good.
  • God is sovereign enough to accomplish good despite human rebellion.
  • Human failure cannot veto divine faithfulness.
• 3. Gentile salvation has a larger purpose, Romans 11:11
  • Salvation came to the Gentiles.
  • Gentile salvation was intended to provoke Israel toward God.
  • Grace should produce gratitude, not superiority.
  • Receiving mercy gives us no reason to look down on those who still need mercy.
• 4. God is not finished with Israel, Romans 11:12
  • Israel's trespass brought riches to the world.
  • Paul anticipates their future "fullness."
  • Lesser to greater: if God brought blessing through their stumbling, imagine what He can accomplish through restoration.
  • Never confuse present unbelief with the limits of God's redemptive power.
• 5. Ministry should be about salvation, not winning, Romans 11:13-14
  • Paul magnifies his ministry among the Gentiles.
  • He still longs for his Jewish brothers and sisters to be saved.
  • Kingdom ministry celebrates God's work wherever it happens.
  • You can win an argument and still lose the person.
• 6. God specializes in "life from the dead," Romans 11:15
  • Paul's language points toward extraordinary restoration and possibly resurrection imagery.
  • Christianity is more than self-improvement.
  • The gospel is resurrection.
  • Do not confuse "I can't see how" with "God can't."
• 7. Remember the root, Romans 11:16
  • Firstfruits and dough.
  • Root and branches.
  • God's covenant purposes have deep roots.
  • Christianity did not begin with us.
  • Abraham, the patriarchs, Israel, the covenants, the prophets, the promises, and ultimately Christ form the redemptive story into which Gentiles have been brought.
• Segment One Application
  • Where have I already written the ending?
  • Who have I decided is too far gone?
  • What prayer have I stopped praying?
  • What part of my own story have I assumed God cannot redeem?
  • Do I have more confidence in someone's ability to rebel than God's ability to redeem?
• Segment One Bottom Line
  • The stumble may be real without being the end.
  • Human rebellion is never sovereign.
  • God's faithfulness is greater than human failure.

Segment Two: Grafted In, So Calm Down

Romans 11:17-24

• 1. Remember what kind of branch you are, Romans 11:17
  • Gentiles are pictured as wild olive branches.
  • We have been grafted into something we did not create.
  • We "share in" the nourishing root.
  • Grace means participation, not ownership.
• 2. Do not become arrogant, Romans 11:18
  • "Do not be arrogant toward the branches."
  • Grace and spiritual superiority are incompatible.
  • You do not support the root.
  • The root supports you.
  • You did not plant the tree, create the gospel, or save yourself.
• 3. Don't mistake invitation for importance, Romans 11:18
  • God does not need us, but He chooses to use us.
  • Ministry is participation in God's work.
  • Success should not inflate us.
  • Failure should not destroy us.
  • We are branches, not the root.
• 4. You stand by faith, Romans 11:19-20
  • Natural branches were broken off because of unbelief.
  • Gentile believers stand through faith.
  • Faith is not a trophy proving our superiority.
  • Faith is the empty hand receiving God's gift.
  • Genuine faith should produce genuine humility.
• 5. "Do not become proud, but fear," Romans 11:20-21
  • Biblical fear is reverence, sobriety, and holy awe.
  • Grace must never become entitlement.
  • Familiarity with Christianity can become spiritual presumption.
  • Recover the wonder that God saved you.
• 6. Behold both God's kindness and severity, Romans 11:22
  • God is loving and holy.
  • God is merciful and righteous.
  • God forgives and God judges.
  • Never construct God only from the attributes that make you comfortable.
  • The cross reveals both God's severity toward sin and His kindness toward sinners.
• 7. Continue in His kindness, Romans 11:22
  • Paul's warning must be taken seriously.
  • Grace is not permission for spiritual complacency.
  • Perseverance does not earn salvation.
  • Living faith continues clinging to Christ.
• 8. God can graft them in again, Romans 11:23
  • Unbelief does not exceed God's saving power.
  • "God has the power to graft them in again."
  • Our responsibility is faithful witness.
  • God's responsibility is changing hearts.
  • Our job is faithfulness, God's job is resurrection.
• 9. Don't underestimate God's power to restore, Romans 11:24
  • If wild branches can be grafted in, natural branches can be restored.
  • Do not presume upon grace.
  • Do not despair of grace.
  • Grace humbles the proud and gives hope to the broken.
• Segment Two Application
  • Has grace made me humble or arrogant?
  • Am I more amazed by Jesus than I used to be?
  • Do I know Christian culture better than I know Christ?
  • Have I confused familiarity with faithfulness?
  • Do I look at unbelievers with compassion or superiority?
  • Is there someone I have stopped believing God can reach?
• Final Landing
  • You are not the root.
  • You are not the gardener.
  • You did not graft yourself in.
  • The root supports you.
  • Everything you have received is grace.
  • Stay humble.
  • Stay dependent.
  • Stay faithful.
  • Stay amazed.
  • If you're standing because of grace, there is no room for boasting.
