No One Gets a Pass Romans - 3:9-20

No One Gets a Pass

Romans 3:9-20 Teaching Outline

Segment One: Under Sin

Romans 3:9-18

  • 1. The Universal Indictment - Romans 3:9

    • Jew and Gentile stand on equal ground.

    • Religious privilege does not equal spiritual innocence.

    • Humanity is "under sin."

    • Sin is more than behavior, it is a condition and dominion.

    • The gospel is not about making good people better, but bringing spiritually dead people to life.

  • 2. None Righteous - Romans 3:10

    • "There is none righteous, no, not one."

    • Paul draws from Psalm 14 and Psalm 53.

    • No one possesses righteousness sufficient to stand before God.

    • Human comparison cannot produce divine righteousness.

  • 3. None Naturally Seek God - Romans 3:11

    • Fallen humanity does not naturally seek God.

    • God is the One who initiates salvation.

    • Luke 19:10, Jesus came "to seek and to save that which was lost."

    • 1 John 4:19, "We love Him because He first loved us."

    • Grace destroys spiritual pride.

  • 4. All Have Turned Aside - Romans 3:12

    • Sin is universal.

    • Introduce the doctrine of total depravity.

    • Total depravity does not mean everyone is as evil as possible.

    • It means every dimension of humanity has been affected by sin.

    • Mind, will, desires, emotions, body, relationships, motives, and worship are corrupted by the fall.

  • 5. The Anatomy of Fallen Humanity - Romans 3:13-17

    • Throat, corruption.

    • Tongue, deceit.

    • Lips, poison.

    • Mouth, bitterness.

    • Feet, violence.

    • Ways, destruction and misery.

    • Humanity does not naturally know the way of peace.

    • Sin is systemic, not superficial.

  • 6. We Need More Than Behavior Modification

    • Better rules cannot fix a corrupted heart.

    • Information alone cannot redeem humanity.

    • Ezekiel 36:26, God promises a new heart.

    • Christianity is about regeneration and resurrection.

    • The answer is not merely "try harder."

    • "You must be born again."

  • 7. The Root Problem - Romans 3:18

    • "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

    • The deepest human problem is ultimately a worship problem.

    • Proverbs 9:10, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

    • Romans 1:21, fallen humanity refuses to glorify God as God.

    • Genesis 3:5, humanity desires God's position without God's authority.

    • Sin ultimately says, "I will determine good and evil for myself."

  • 8. Destroy Spiritual Superiority

    • Romans 3:9, "Are we better than they?"

    • Christians are rescued, not inherently superior.

    • We confront sin from a position of gratitude, not arrogance.

    • 1 Corinthians 10:12, "Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall."

  • 9. Probing Application

    • Do I believe I needed Jesus to improve me or rescue me?

    • When I see someone trapped in sin, do I feel superiority or gratitude?

    • Where am I comparing myself with others instead of Christ?

    • Do I genuinely fear God?

    • If God had not come looking for me, where would I be?

  • 10. Transition

    • Paul is destroying every false hope before revealing the true hope.

    • Self-righteousness must die before grace can be fully appreciated.

    • Luke 18:13, "God, be merciful to me a sinner!"

    • The darker the diagnosis, the more glorious the Savior.

Segment Two: Every Mouth Stopped

Romans 3:19-20

  • 1. The Courtroom Verdict - Romans 3:19

    • Paul has finished presenting the case against humanity.

    • "That every mouth may be stopped."

    • Humanity's excuses, comparisons, rationalizations, and defenses collapse.

    • Spiritual maturity means learning to confess without adding "but."

  • 2. Guilty Before God

    • "All the world may become guilty before God."

    • God, not culture, is the standard of righteousness.

    • We measure horizontally, God measures vertically.

    • Leviticus 19:2, "You shall be holy."

    • Matthew 5:48, "You shall be perfect."

    • Being better than someone else cannot make us righteous before God.

  • 3. No One Is Justified by the Law - Romans 3:20

    • "By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified."

    • Justification means to be declared righteous.

    • The law was never a ladder by which sinners climb to God.

    • Obedience today cannot erase yesterday's guilt.

    • Keeping some laws does not cancel the laws we have broken.

  • 4. Law and Gospel

    • The law reveals what righteousness requires.

    • The gospel reveals where righteousness is found.

    • The law says, "Do."

    • The gospel says, "Done."

    • The law exposes sin.

    • The gospel reveals Christ.

  • 5. The Law Is a Mirror

    • Romans 3:20, "By the law is the knowledge of sin."

    • The law diagnoses but cannot cure.

    • A mirror reveals dirt but cannot wash your face.

    • Romans 7:7, Paul knew sin through the law.

    • The law does not create our sin, it exposes it.

  • 6. The Diagnosis Is an Act of Grace

    • A loving physician tells the patient the truth.

    • God exposes our inability to save ourselves so that we will seek a Savior.

    • Mark 2:17, the sick need a physician.

    • As long as we believe we can save ourselves, we will not see our need for Christ.

  • 7. The Danger of Self-Righteousness

    • Luke 18:9-14, Pharisee and tax collector.

    • The Pharisee presents his spiritual resume.

    • The tax collector asks for mercy.

    • "God, be merciful to me a sinner!"

    • Jesus says the repentant sinner goes home justified.

  • 8. God Does Not Ignore Sin

    • The gospel is not God lowering His standards.

    • God remains holy and just.

    • Sin must be judged.

    • Romans 3:26, God is both "just and the justifier."

    • The cross satisfies justice while extending mercy.

  • 9. The Great Exchange

    • 2 Corinthians 5:21.

    • Christ knew no sin.

    • Our sin is placed upon Christ.

    • His righteousness is credited to believers.

    • He receives what we deserve.

    • We receive what He deserves.

    • Justification rests on Christ's righteousness, not ours.

  • 10. Drop the Spiritual Resume

    • Philippians 3:8-9.

    • Paul rejects his own righteousness in order to be found in Christ.

    • We cannot cling to self-righteousness and the cross simultaneously.

    • Stop trying to prove your worthiness to God.

    • Come to Christ with no defense except His grace.

  • 11. Probing Application

    • What am I still trying to prove to God?

    • Where am I still defending myself?

    • Have I confused morality with righteousness?

    • Is my confidence before God based on my performance or Christ's?

    • Can I simply say, "Lord, I have no defense. I need mercy"?

  • 12. The Great Transition - Romans 3:21

    • Romans 3:20 leaves humanity guilty and helpless.

    • Then come the words: "But now..."

    • Human righteousness has failed, but now.

    • The law has exposed our guilt, but now.

    • Every mouth has been stopped, but now.

    • Romans 3:21, "The righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed."

    • The righteousness we cannot produce is the righteousness God provides.

Final Teaching Movement

  • The problem: We are under sin.

  • The verdict: We are guilty before God.

  • The law: It exposes our guilt but cannot justify us.

  • The silence: Every human boast and excuse is stopped.

  • The need: We require a righteousness outside ourselves.

  • The answer: Jesus Christ.

  • The transition: "But now..." - Romans 3:21.

  • Closing truth: No one gets a pass, but in Christ, sinners can receive grace.
