Romans 3:1-8

Romans 3:1-8 Teaching Outline

Let God Be True

Segment 1: The Danger of Being Close to God

Romans 3:1-2

  • Paul's question: "What advantage has the Jew?"

  • Romans 2 has removed confidence in:

    • Religious identity

    • Circumcision

    • Possession of the Law

    • Outward religion

  • Paul's answer: "Much in every way."

  • Israel's great privilege:

    • "Entrusted with the oracles of God"

    • Covenant

    • Law

    • Prophets

    • Promises

    • Messianic expectation

  • Key distinction:

    • Privilege is not salvation.

    • Access to revelation is not response to revelation.

    • Possessing the Word is not believing the Word.

    • Information is not transformation.

  • John 5:39-40

    • They knew the Scriptures but missed Christ.

  • Revelation creates responsibility.

    • Luke 12:48

    • "To whom much was given, much will be required."

  • James 1:22

    • Hearing without doing produces self-deception.

  • Modern religious credentials:

    • Church attendance

    • Baptism

    • Christian upbringing

    • Bible knowledge

    • Ministry involvement

    • Denominational identity

  • Philippians 3:4-7

    • Paul's religious resume

    • Everything counted as loss compared with Christ.

  • Election should produce:

    • Gratitude, not superiority

    • Stewardship, not arrogance

  • Grace eliminates boasting.

    • Romans 3:27

  • Probing questions:

    • Has my knowledge of God outpaced my obedience to God?

    • Do I know truths I am not living?

    • Has Scripture become content rather than transformation?

    • Have I mistaken familiarity with God for relationship with God?

  • Bottom line:

    • The Scriptures are the map.

    • Christ is the destination.

    • Spiritual privilege cannot save.

    • Only Jesus can.

Segment 2: Let God Be True

Romans 3:3-4

  • Paul's second objection:

    • "What if some were unfaithful?"

    • "Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?"

  • Paul's answer:

    • "By no means!"

    • "Let God be true though every one were a liar."

  • Human failure cannot change God's character.

  • God's faithfulness is rooted in who He is.

    • 2 Timothy 2:13

    • Numbers 23:19

    • Titus 1:2

    • Hebrews 6:18

  • God is not merely truthful.

    • God is the standard of truth.

  • Truth is not determined by:

    • Culture

    • Popular opinion

    • Feelings

    • Majority vote

    • Personal preference

  • God's faithfulness includes:

    • His promises

    • His holiness

    • His correction

    • His discipline

    • His justice

    • His judgment

  • Romans 3:4 quotes Psalm 51:4.

  • David's repentance:

    • Stops defending himself.

    • Confesses his sin.

    • Agrees with God's verdict.

  • Key definition:

    • Repentance is agreeing with God about our sin.

  • Genesis 3:12

    • The sinful instinct is to shift blame.

  • Probing questions:

    • Where am I asking God to agree with me instead of asking Him to correct me?

    • Am I looking to Scripture for confirmation or transformation?

    • Have I blamed God for something for which He is holding me responsible?

  • Romans 12:2

    • God transforms us through the renewing of our minds.

  • The failure of Christians does not invalidate Christ.

    • A Christian's hypocrisy does not make Christ a hypocrite.

    • A preacher's dishonesty does not make God dishonest.

    • A church's failure does not make the Gospel false.

  • God's faithfulness should produce:

    • Security

    • Repentance

  • 1 John 1:9

    • God is faithful and just to forgive.

  • Philippians 1:6

    • God finishes what He begins.

  • Bottom line:

    • People fail.

    • Churches fail.

    • Leaders fail.

    • We fail.

    • God remains true.

    • Spiritual maturity begins when we stop asking God to agree with us and learn to agree with Him.

Segment 3: When Grace Becomes an Excuse

Romans 3:5-8

  • Paul's third objection:

    • If our unrighteousness demonstrates God's righteousness, why judge us?

  • Romans 3:5-6

    • God's judgment remains righteous.

    • "How could God judge the world?"

  • God's justice is part of His goodness.

  • Psalm 89:14

    • Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

  • Biblical wrath:

    • Not uncontrolled anger

    • God's holy opposition to evil

  • We want God to judge evil "out there."

  • Romans reveals the evil "in here."

  • Romans 3:7

    • If my lie magnifies God's truth, why am I condemned?

  • Romans 3:8

    • "Why not do evil that good may come?"

  • Key theological principle:

    • God's ability to redeem evil does not make evil righteous.

  • Genesis 50:20

    • "You meant evil... God meant it for good."

    • Human intention: evil

    • Divine intention: good

  • God's sovereignty:

    • Rules over evil

    • Does not approve evil

    • Does not excuse evil

    • Does not make God the author of evil

  • The supreme example: the cross.

    • Acts 2:23

    • Acts 4:27-28

  • The crucifixion was:

    • God's sovereign plan

    • Human wickedness

    • The means of redemption

  • Key principle:

    • God's sovereignty over sin is never permission for sin.

  • Common excuses:

    • "God will forgive me."

    • "God can use this."

    • "God knows my heart."

    • "God worked it out."

  • God's redemption of a decision does not equal God's approval of the decision.

  • The ends do not justify sinful means.

  • 1 Samuel 15:22

    • "To obey is better than sacrifice."

  • God does not need our disobedience to accomplish His will.

  • Grace versus presumption:

    • Grace: "I have sinned and need mercy."

    • Presumption: "I can sin because mercy is available."

  • Romans 6:1-2

    • Grace never becomes permission to continue in sin.

  • The cross reveals:

    • The seriousness of sin

    • The holiness of God

    • The justice of God

    • The love of God

    • The magnitude of grace

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21

    • Christ bears our sin.

    • We receive His righteousness.

  • Romans 3:26

    • God is both "just and the justifier."

  • Probing questions:

    • Have I turned grace into permission for something Jesus died to free me from?

    • Have I mistaken God's patience for God's approval?

    • Am I using spiritual language to justify disobedience?

    • Am I depending on God's forgiveness while resisting God's authority?

  • Titus 2:11-12

    • Grace does not merely forgive us.

    • Grace trains us to renounce ungodliness.

  • Bottom line:

    • Sin is real.

    • Judgment is righteous.

    • Human responsibility matters.

    • God's sovereignty remains supreme.

    • God can redeem what He does not approve.

    • Evil does not get the last word.

    • Jesus does.

Romans 3:1-8 Progression

  • Step 1: Privilege, Romans 3:1-2

    • "What advantage do we have?"

    • Privilege cannot save us.

  • Step 2: Faithfulness, Romans 3:3-4

    • "Does our failure make God unfaithful?"

    • Human failure cannot change God.

  • Step 3: Justice, Romans 3:5-8

    • "If God gets glory despite our sin, why judge us?"

    • God's sovereignty never excuses human sin.

  • Paul's trajectory:

    • Religious privilege cannot justify us.

    • Human unfaithfulness cannot discredit God.

    • Human reasoning cannot overturn God's justice.

    • Every excuse is being removed.

    • The courtroom is ready for the verdict.

  • Next: Romans 3:9-20

    • "None is righteous, no, not one."

    • Every mouth is stopped.

    • The whole world becomes accountable to God.

    • Humanity's defense rests.

    • Our need for the righteousness of Christ becomes undeniable.

When Our Excuses Meet God’s Faithfulness

Romans 3:1-8 If religious privilege cannot save us, does it have any value? If God’s people are unfaithful, does that make God’s promises unreliable? And if our sin ultimately displays God’s righteousness, how can He still judge us? In Romans 3:1-8, Paul anticipates the objections of the religious heart and dismantles them one by one.
