• 1. The Great Gospel Irony, Romans 9:30
  • Gentiles were not pursuing righteousness.
  • Yet they received righteousness by faith.
  • Righteousness is received, not achieved.
  • Grace destroys spiritual bragging rights.
• 2. Running Hard in the Wrong Direction, Romans 9:31
  • Israel passionately pursued righteousness.
  • Religious effort did not produce right standing with God.
  • Sincerity and discipline are not substitutes for faith.
  • You can climb the religious ladder and discover it is leaning against the wrong wall.
• 3. The Problem Wasn't the Law, Romans 9:32
  • Israel pursued righteousness "as if it were based on works."
  • The law reveals righteousness but cannot create it in fallen humanity.
  • The law exposes our need for grace.
  • The mirror can show you the dirt, but it cannot wash your face.
• 4. Jesus, the Stumbling Stone, Romans 9:32-33
  • Self-righteousness inevitably trips over Jesus.
  • Christ destroys our ability to boast.
  • The offense of grace is that we come empty-handed.
  • Some stumble over Christ, others trust Him.
  • "Whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."
• 5. The Danger of Adding Jesus to Your Resume
  • Christianity can become another badge of self-righteousness.
  • Jesus is not evidence that we are impressive.
  • Jesus is evidence that we desperately needed saving.
  • Ask: Am I trusting Christ or trusting the kind of Christian I think I have become?
• 6. Deep Theology Should Produce Deep Compassion, Romans 10:1
  • Paul's theology of God's sovereignty leads him to prayer.
  • "My heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved."
  • Sovereignty does not eliminate evangelism or prayer.
  • Religious people still need the gospel.
• 7. Zeal Is Not Enough, Romans 10:2
  • Israel had "a zeal for God."
  • Their zeal was "not according to knowledge."
  • Passion does not determine truth.
  • Sincerity cannot save.
  • You can be passionately wrong about God.
• 8. The Addiction to Self-Righteousness, Romans 10:3
  • They were "seeking to establish their own" righteousness.
  • Humanity constantly builds spiritual resumes.
  • We compare ourselves horizontally instead of looking vertically toward God's holiness.
  • Self-righteousness says, "At least I'm better than them."
  • The gospel says, "All have sinned."
• 9. Grace Requires Surrender, Romans 10:3
  • They "did not submit to God's righteousness."
  • Receiving grace means surrendering the fantasy of self-salvation.
  • Surrender your resume.
  • Surrender your comparisons.
  • Surrender your religious trophies.
  • Stop trying to prove yourself worthy of something God gives as a gift.
• 10. Christ Is the Telos, Romans 10:4
  • "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness."
  • Greek: telos, goal, culmination, completion.
  • Jesus did not discard the law, He fulfilled it.
  • The law, sacrifices, priesthood, temple, promises, and prophets ultimately point toward Christ.
  • Jesus fulfilled what sinners could never fulfill.
• 11. Everyone Who Believes, Romans 10:4
  • Not everyone who achieves.
  • Not everyone with the right ancestry.
  • Not everyone who cleans themselves up.
  • "Everyone who believes."
  • The gospel replaces achievement with trust.
• 12. The Probing Question: What Are You Actually Trusting?
  • Your morality?
  • Your ministry?
  • Your theology?
  • Your church attendance?
  • Your improvement?
  • Your reputation?
  • Or Christ?
• 13. Religion vs. Gospel
  • Religion: "I will establish my righteousness."
  • Gospel: "God has provided my righteousness."
  • Religion: "Look at my record."
  • Gospel: "Look at Christ."
  • Religion: "I climbed high enough."
  • Gospel: "Christ came down."
  • Religion: "I earned it."
  • Grace: "Receive it."
• 14. Obedience in Its Proper Place
  • We do not obey to become accepted.
  • We obey because in Christ we have been accepted.
  • We do not pursue holiness to earn God's love.
  • We pursue holiness because we have encountered God's love.
  • Grace does not eliminate obedience, it gives obedience the right foundation.
• 15. Closing Challenge
  • Are you pursuing righteousness or trusting the Righteous One?
  • Stop bringing God your resume.
  • Stop trying to establish what Christ has already accomplished.
  • Christ is the goal.
  • Christ is the fulfillment.
  • Christ is our righteousness.
  • You are not obeying your way toward a Savior. You obey because the Savior has already come.
