• What have you been tolerating that God has told you to put to death?
• What old identity are you still allowing to define you?
• What voice has more influence over you than God's Word?
• Are you fighting for God's acceptance or fighting from God's acceptance?
• Are you approaching God like a defendant entering a courtroom or a son entering his Father's house?
• What would change if you genuinely believed you were God's child?
  • How would you handle temptation?
  • Criticism?
  • Failure?
  • Suffering?
  • Prayer?
• Discipline is not rejection.
• Conviction is not condemnation.
• Holiness is not the entrance exam into God's family.
• Holiness is what the Father produces in the children He has already brought home.

4. THROUGH THE NOISE: Who Gets to Tell You Who You Are?

• Modern culture is obsessed with identity.
• Everyone wants authority to define you:
  • Politics.
  • Demographics.
  • Sexuality.
  • Career.
  • Trauma.
  • Desires.
  • Social media.
  • Political tribes.
• Culture says, "Whatever you feel deeply must be who you are."
• Romans 8 says you do not owe every desire obedience.
• Culture: "Follow your heart."
• Scripture: Your heart needs transformation.
• Culture: "Be true to yourself."
• Jesus: Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.
• The gospel is not discovering your authentic old self.
• The gospel is dying to the old self and being made new in Christ.

5. FEELINGS ARE NOT LORD

• Modern culture increasingly treats feelings as authorities.
• Strong desire does not equal moral authority.
• You are not:
  • Your feelings.
  • Your appetites.
  • Your temptations.
  • Your worst moment.
  • Your greatest accomplishment.
  • Your political affiliation.
  • Your bank account.
  • Your follower count.
• Romans 8:14 gives the believer's defining identity: child of God.

6. POLITICS CANNOT CARRY YOUR IDENTITY

• Politics has become an identity factory.
• Political tribes disciple people:
  • What to fear.
  • What to hate.
  • What to celebrate.
  • Which sins to condemn.
  • Which sins to overlook.
• Political labels may describe convictions, but they cannot carry the weight of Christian identity.
• Caesar doesn't get to name you.
• Culture doesn't get to name you.
• Your party doesn't get to name you.
• Your appetites don't get to name you.
• Your Father does.

7. FEAR CANNOT DISCIPLE YOU

• Romans 8:15, "Not...slavery to fall back into fear."
• Modern life constantly markets fear:
  • Elections.
  • Economy.
  • War.
  • Technology.
  • Cultural decline.
  • Our children's future.
• Christians are called to awareness, not ignorance.
• Christians are also forbidden from becoming slaves to fear.
• Ask not only, "Is this news true?"
• Also ask, "What is this doing to my soul?"
• Is it making you:
  • Faithful?
  • Courageous?
  • Prayerful?
  • Discerning?
  • Obedient?
• Or:
  • Terrified?
  • Furious?
  • Cynical?
  • Addicted to outrage?
• You can be informed without being enslaved.
• You can recognize evil without becoming consumed by hatred.
• You can fight for truth without forgetting who you are.

8. IDENTITY PREPARES US FOR COSTLY FAITHFULNESS

• Romans 8:17 connects sonship with suffering.
• If identity depends on approval, you compromise when applause stops.
• If identity depends on success, you compromise when obedience threatens success.
• If identity depends on politics, you excuse evil when your side commits it.
• If identity depends on comfort, you compromise when following Jesus becomes costly.
• If identity is rooted in adoption:
  • You can lose applause without losing yourself.
  • Lose an election without losing hope.
  • Lose money without losing your inheritance.
  • Lose popularity without losing your Father.
  • Lose your life without losing your future.
