Winning the Battle Between Truth and Error - I John 4

1. Test the Spirits (4:1-3)

  • Do not believe every spirit
  • Actively test what you hear
  • Many false prophets are present in the world
  • The test: What do they say about Jesus Christ?
  • Truth affirms Jesus came in the flesh
  • Error denies or distorts Christ
  • This is the spirit of antichrist

2. Know Your Source (4:4-6)

  • Believers are from God
  • You have already overcome
  • Greater is He in you than he in the world
  • The world listens to its own
  • Truth recognizes apostolic teaching
  • Error rejects it
  • Discernment comes from knowing the source

3. The Command to Love (4:7-8)

  • Love one another, this is not optional
  • Love originates from God
  • Everyone who loves is born of God
  • Loving proves you know God
  • Failure to love reveals you do not know Him
  • God is love, not just loving

4. The Definition of Love (4:9-10)

  • God demonstrated love, He did not just declare it
  • He sent His only Son into the world
  • Purpose: that we might live through Him
  • Love is not initiated by us
  • God loved first
  • Jesus is the propitiation for sin

5. The Obligation to Love Others (4:11-12)

  • If God loved us, we must love others
  • Love is the evidence of God dwelling in us
  • No one has seen God physically
  • Love makes the invisible God visible
  • His love is perfected in us through action

6. Assurance Through the Spirit (4:13-16)

  • We know we abide in Him by the Spirit given
  • The apostles testify: Jesus is the Savior of the world
  • Confession of Jesus confirms union with God
  • God abides in the one who abides in love
  • Knowing God and believing His love go together

7. Perfect Love and Confidence (4:17-18)

  • Love matures and is perfected in us
  • Produces confidence for the day of judgment
  • As He is, so are we in this world
  • Perfect love casts out fear
  • Fear is tied to punishment
  • Ongoing fear reveals immature love

8. The Root of Our Love (4:19)

  • We love because He first loved us
  • God is always the initiator
  • Our love is a response, not the source

9. The Test of Authentic Faith (4:20-21)

  • Claiming to love God while hating others is a lie
  • You cannot love God whom you have not seen, while hating those you have seen
  • Love for people is the visible proof of love for God
  • This is a command, not a suggestion

Core Teaching Flow (Simple Steps)

  • Test what you hear
  • Know who you belong to
  • Receive God’s love
  • Reflect that love outward
  • Walk in the Spirit for assurance
  • Let love mature and remove fear
  • Live out love as proof of faith
